May & June
In May & June we are busy doing a lot of planting and getting the fields ready. We turn the green manure (cover crop rye) into the soil with the plow and disc the fields to break up the soil for planting.
For most of the vegetables grown we lay down black plastic mulch which allows us to keep the plants free of weeds without herbicide as well as micro-irrigate with a drip tape. Our tomatoes are given particular care and attention. The rows are staked and each plant is kept up off the ground with several sets of nylon string.
On our farm, we have both rocky, sloped, drier ground as well as low, wetter land which means we have to keep several types of tractors and implements in shape to farm.
Some of our tractors have been used since the 40's and are still used every year thanks to Old Poppy!!
Early Crops & June harvest
Some crops we plant are ready in June and we are ready to harvest them! We enjoy the first lettuces, beans, cucumber, beans and berries that come in June.
Most of our early crops are organic and we are expanding our organic production each year. This year (2012) we have made a significant investment into our asparagas bed, as our CSA members will enjoy our organic asparagas.
Our tomatoes and corn will not be ready until July but until then our CSA members can pick up the early produce each week.
